What is the hiring process to be a PandaTree tutor?

  • First, submit your resume to PandaTree.
  • We’ll review your resume and invite candidates who are a good match to an online, 30-minute interview.
  • Candidates who pass the interview screen will be invited to complete one or two online test lessons with volunteer students. The lesson recordings are reviewed by our hiring managers.
  • Candidates with successful test lessons will be asked for references and will also complete background checks.
  • If everything checks out, you’ll get an offer to be a PandaTree tutor!

How much does PandaTree pay?

  • PandaTree tutors earn $18 to $24 per hour. Most tutors earn $20 per hour.
  • We pay $18 an hour for training time. (Other companies make you do training on your own time!)
  • Regular lessons are paid at $10 for 25 minute lessons and $20 for 50 minute lessons. The lessons include 5 to 15 minutes of prep time.
  • Busy tutors who tutor more than 30 hours in a two week period earn 10% higher pay rates: $11 for 25 minute lessons and $22 for 50 minute lessons.
  • Experienced tutors may be invited to tutor small groups. Group lesson pay rates are $12 for 25 minute lessons and $24 for 50 minute lessons.

What’s the difference between being hired as a part-time employee versus a contractor?

  • PandaTree hires tutors as part-time employees. As an employee you’ll receive a W-2 tax form (not a 1099) and PandaTree will make required company contributions to your payroll taxes (the amount varies by state and your tax profile.) This means at the end of the year you’ll likely have more money in your pocket than contractors who need to pay all of their payroll taxes for themselves.
  • As a part-time employee you’ll receive ongoing training and development and we’ll pay for your training time. Your lessons will be reviewed periodically by managers and you’ll get coaching on how to grow as a teacher.
  • Since tutors are employees, and we invest in their training and development, tutors may not work for another online tutoring company at the same time they are working for PandaTree.

How many hours will I work?

  • Tutors can choose the hours they want to be available for tutoring and should be available at least 15 hours per week. More availability is better.
  • PandaTree is open for tutoring from 8 am - 11 pm Eastern Time (5 am - 8 pm Pacific Time) 7 days per week.
  • PandaTree is busiest when most students are not in school. During the school year, this means after school and early evenings during the week and Saturdays and Sundays. During the summer, mornings and early afternoons are busiest.
  • Since parents choose the tutor and lesson time, PandaTree does not guarantee the number of tutoring hours a tutor will get.
  • Tutors who tutor more than 30 hours in a 2 week period (an average of 15 hours a week) earn a 10% higher pay rate on their lessons.

What qualifications do PandaTree tutors need?

  • PandaTree tutors need to live in and be legally allowed to work in the United States. For payroll and taxation reasons we are unable to hire tutors who live outside the United States at this time.
  • Tutors are required to have a 4 year college degree or greater.
  • Tutors should have at least 2 years of experience teaching or working with children.
  • Tutors must also meet PandaTree’s technical requirements, including having a stable and high speed internet connection (minimum 100 Mbps downloads), a laptop or desktop computer, and a camera and microphone (built in or plug-in).
